Meet The Team

What’s your journey in the industry so far?

I started my journey when I moved from Porto, Portugal to London to study music performance and recording at university. Since then, I’ve worked in different parts of the industry including in Marketing for renowned music venues in London, and as an artist under the stage name Lexie Palms, producing and performing my own tracks, and DJing.

Molecular introduced me to the world of sonic branding, bespoke composition and sound design for brands, TV and ads, and the power of translating a brand’s personality, visual identity into music & sound. It’s been a blast ever since.

Tell us more about your role and what you do. How long have you been there?

I’ve been at Molecular for 5 years. Back then, we were only a team of three people, so it’s been amazing to help grow the studio into what it is today, a creative hub for not only the in-house team, but for our collaborators and clients. Working now as a producer, and in a hands-on environment, my role means I get to work in various stages of our projects - in the early research and developing stages, concept, and brief creation. I work directly with both clients and our collaborators (composers, sound designers, session musicians, etc) in making sure that a brand’s vision (or sound) is coming to life

What’s the most favourite part of your job?

I enjoy the process of understanding a brand and their identity and collaborating with our team towards translating that same essence into music and sound. Through assisting with the brief and concept creation, I’ve quickly realised that a brand’s needs, traits, and attributes can be quite distinct, which means that every day can bring a new challenge. For me that’s what keeps it exciting and fun. One day I could be producing a full orchestra studio session for a brand, whilst the next day I’m off on a field recording session for a completely different project

What is the project you have most enjoyed working on/or are proud of?

This is a difficult question, as there’s been so many special projects, I have had the pleasure of working on! But working on the sonic identity for the Premier League has been a real highlight for me. It was special to see so many musicians record together at Abbey Road’s Studio after our first lockdown and the shutdown of so many parts of the music industry. I might have shed a tear or two when the orchestra got started

Tell us something that most people wouldn’t know about you

I often stay late at the studio, working on some of my music and projects! My evenings go from doing some heavier DJ mixes, or peacefully practicing some piano in Studio 1 (the last one is our neighbour’s preferred choice)!

Who is your inspiration and why?

I’d say James Blake is up there. He’s hugely inspiring because not only is he an amazing producer, songwriter and performer that pushes boundaries with his skills, but because he also advocates and often speaks about fair treatment in the music industry and musician’s rights. It’s quite a tough world to navigate and one that changes quickly and not always keeps everyone’s best interests at heart, so I find it important that people like him speak up about it all.

If someone is reading this, who would like to do what you do, what advice would you give them? For example, courses to study, essential publications to read, skills that you need

Don’t put yourself in a box when it comes to the role you envision for yourself! There are so many amazing, wonderful, and weird sectors in the music industry, and so many lessons to learn. My advice would be to keep an open mind. You might be surprised at the turns your career might take. Before Molecular, I had overlooked the world of bespoke composition and sound design for brands, tv, ads, etc. I saw a job opening at Molecular and applied out of genuine interest and curiosity about the projects the team was involved in. I could never have imagined how much work each brief, sonic brand, album entails and in so many different areas and skills! I’m still learning new things every day and am so glad I kept an open and curious mind.
